Coming Home
Chronologically, “Coming Home” takes place shortly after “Necro” though in its own story arc. Our protagonist gone shambler relates his waking and return trip home after colliding with an ambulance at substantially unsafe speeds.
Awake on the street
Propped up against a car
Not mine
I don’t think
There was an accident
Bodies lay motionless
Bodies in motion
Some shamble aimless
A sense of loss
No pain or guilt
Just hunger
Turn to the east
Black clouds clutch the horizon
Raised from my slumber
Raised to my feet
Not working right
Not walking right
Ankle bent at an ugly angle
Glass broken windows
Stare back like angry eyes
Devoid of souls
Devoid of life
Every step
Grinds bone to bone
Some stand listless
Shifting on their feet
Sway to an unheard song
So hungry
I know I’ve been here before
I know this place
Flitting image recalling
Deja vu that won’t go away
Parts of people I must have known
Soil their yards
Crawl beneath cars
Embracing their loved ones
White house, green trim
Sedan in the drive
Near the postbox, sits open
Won’t receive mail again
Sounds from within
Banging frantic
Front door opens to a girl I know
Expression of joy does change
Daddy’s home
